Data Theft: 16,000 records, Nevada

The home building company, Pulte Home Inc, based in Detroit has suffered a data theft in Las Vegas, involving financial and personnel information

The company is notifying 16,000 customers that records were stolen from its Las Vegas office.

In this case of data theft a box of backup tapes were were stolen, which are hard to access (especially if its email data) by the average IT bod, let alone the average thief.

Therefore if the tapes were stolen, in an opportunistic thief, the data is probably safe; but if the tapes were targeted, and only those where taken, then its highly likely that the data will be used in fraud/identity theft.

Pulte has stated that  it was offering to foot the bill for a premium credit monitoring service.
